Drupal requires an email address and for certain things needs access to a mail server. You don't need your own for this you can use 3rd party solutions like gmail but that would be doing things the easy way and thats not why we are here. It makes sense to do this early on so we can test its working ok and have the details ready to punch in during drupal install.
